Cinnamon is NOT Your Average Spice!

Fall time is my favorite time of year. With the beautiful color-changing leaves, the crisp air in the evenings, and snuggling by a toasty fireside, I look forward to the Fall season. Furthermore, Fall reminds me of my favorite comfy sweater – you know, the one that year after year you claim you are going to toss out but it still ends up in your closet the next Fall? Yep, that one. Fall also reminds me of the scent of Pumpkin and Apple Pies baking in the oven and the scent of cinnamon filling the air. Nothing beats the tantalizing scent of cinnamon — Yum! However, it is important to remember that cinnamon is not your average spice!

Aside from cinnamon being a go-to spice for some breakfast morning toast or those homemade pies, did you know that cinnamon has additional uses that aren’t just for food? Here are 5 unconventional uses for cinnamon that will turn that kitchen cupboard staple in to a household must-have.

Spice Up Your Hair

When it comes to caring for those beautiful tresses, cinnamon has some amazing qualities. If you want to give your hair a little root boost, try mixing 1/4 cup of cinnamon with a 1/4 cup honey (I know, the temptation is there to take a taste, but remember you are feeding your hair on this one) and applying the sticky paste to your scalp for about 15 minutes. Due to the increased blood flow caused by the cinnamon, you just may start to notice your hair coming in thicker and fuller due to stimulated hair growth. Be sure to rinse thoroughly, though, or you may find yourself just buzzing with activity!

Bugs Be Gone

Remember that favorite comfy sweater that you love to wear year after year? Well, just imagine that same sweater being riddled with holes from sitting in summer storage due to pesky moths, ugh! Guess what? Cinnamon can also help calm your woes and rid those moths with little effort. Combine 2 Tbsp cinnamon with 1/2 cup each of black peppercorns and whole cloves. Add this combination to individual sachet bags that you can purchase from any local craft store, and drop the sachet packs into your closets and drawers. Those moths won’t stand a chance, and you will get to enjoy that comfy sweater for yet another season!

Stop That Burning Between Your Toes

Did you know that cinnamon has medicinal uses also? If you have ever suffered from the itchy and painful discomfort of athlete’s foot, you will appreciate a cinnamon foot soak. Boil 10 cinnamon sticks in 4 cups of water. Allow the spicy broth to cool  and then soak your ailing feet in the cinnamon foot bath for approximately 20 minutes. While you soak away the worries of the day, enjoy the microbial benefits of cinnamon for your athlete’s foot. Not to mention, your house will be filled with the aromatics of the soothing and welcoming smell of cinnamon sticks. Sounds like a win-win combination to me!

On the Road Again

The one thing that I do NOT enjoy is driving. With the hustle and bustle of what seems to be endless traffic, I am often on edge and feeling anxious until I reach my final destination. Cinnamon can also help ease the tension associated with driving. Use a cinnamon air freshener in your car to help alleviate the stress and anxiety associated with the open road. This aromatic spice also serves to increase your alertness while driving, so buckle up, take a deep breath and let cinnamon ease your mind until you make it from point A to point B.

Don’t Fret the Scuffs

I am sure you have all experienced the moment when you are admiring your beautiful gleaming hardwood floors or that piece of heirloom furniture from years gone by, and then “OH NO!” Yep, you see it. The scratch or scuff mark that you know wasn’t there before but is now staring you right in the face. With cinnamon by your side, you don’t need to fret those scuffs any longer. Take some ground cinnamon on a cotton swab and rub it into the scuff mark. Soon that scratch will fade and you can go back to enjoying the rich wooden hue with out that blinding scratch interfering with your admiration.

Now that you discovered 5 additional uses for cinnamon, go ahead and pour that cup of tea and lavish a piece of apple pie. You can sprinkle that spicy goodness on your afternoon comfort food, but be sure to keep a little set aside for the next time you need that not-so-average spice to use around the house for something other than food.   1. Who knew cinnamon had so many uses? I do find the scent calming. And I also want to eat cinnamon rolls whenever I smell it. I kind of want cinnamon rolls now, actually.
