Upcycled and Salvaged Rustic Home Decor Ideas

There is nothing more exciting than walking into a thrift or salvage store and spotting an unclaimed treasure that is someone else’s trash! The overall decor style of my log home is rustic. This doesn’t fall short of several “upcycled” and salvaged repurposed pieces. With a little imagination and elbow grease, you too can easily recreate some of the decor ideas that I am sharing with you in this post. Below are some ideas for inspiration. So, start searching for those trash to treasure pieces and have fun!

Salvaged Interior and Exterior Doors Upcycled to Leaning Wall Art

I often come across old and “worn” doors when visiting salvage yards and even posted in online market places. I have seen pieces left as-is with all the chipped paint and rough and rusted hardware, and that is ok! In my home, I have an upcycled salvaged door leaning wall art piece that has been repainted and sanded to add an aged flair. The pop of teal blue green adds some needed color against my log home wood walls. The color matches perfectly with the rest of the decor in my home. I also added a nail hanger to the door, so that I can easily display wreathes that I may use on my front door but that are perhaps currently out of season, etc. Use your imagination! Anything goes when it comes to upcycling and repurposing salvaged decor. The more rustic the better, in my opinion.

Upcycled Antique Toolboxes Make the Perfect Table Centerpiece

While on vacation in Myrtle Beach a few years back, I came across an antique store that was packed full of treasures from years gone by. As I rummaged through the floors of antiques, I spotted this old antique toolbox in all of its aged and worn glory! Though I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it, I knew that I just had to have it. And, at a price of $40, I couldn’t pass it up! Once I got the toolbox home, my creative wheels started to turn. I realized how perfect this toolbox would be as an upcycled centerpiece for my dining room table.

First, I started looking through my current home decor pieces and put together this rustic centerpiece. I left the toolbox as-is, and only had to wipe the dust and dirt off but the paint color was perfect for my home decor. I added a few canning jars that I had stored in my basement, along with some berry garland and a few metal star picks. The finishing touch was an enamelware plaque with the perfect “Welcome” message. I decided to tack it to the side of the toolbox centerpiece. Though this rustic creation has been moved to several locations around my house over the past few years, it always remains a staple piece in my salvaged rustic home decor collection.

Salvaged and Upcycled Cabinet Doors to Hanging Wall Art

Two of my favorite pieces in my salvaged rustic home decor collection are these two repurposed cabinet doors! Again, these doors have been painted with a similar color teal blue to match my home decor. The added color is just enough “pop” against the dark log wood walls of my home. The original cabinet hardware is still in tact, which is a bonus. I added to the cabinet doors a few decor items I had around the house for some additional spunk. In the end, I decided to hang the two doors side by side, since they appear to come from the same original cabinet unit. The floating doors give the appearance of cabinets so admirers can get a sense of where these treasures come from originally.

Turning Old Rags and Material Scraps into Hanging Wreaths

Do you ever have that favorite shirt that just isn’t wearable any longer? Perhaps even old rags that you just don’t know what to do with? Why not upcycle those rags and apparel into a hanging wreath? You can even take some of those material scraps and soak them in tea water.  This will add a “tea-stained” effect for more of a rustic flair. Simply cut or tear the material in to skinny scraps. Take a metal wire hanger and stretch into a circular form (keeping the hanger hook in tact for easy wreath hanging). Next, start tying and knotting the material around the wire hanger until you reach your desired fullness for your wreath. Don’t be afraid to mix and match colors and textures. Below is a photo of a tea-stained wreath that was tied to resemble an american flag simply by color placement.

Side Tables Made from Suitcases and Briefcases

I often come across old and battered suitcases and briefcases in local thrift shops. My thoughts are “what could possibly be done to add new life to these old treasures?” Why not take a suitcase or two and upcycle them into an interesting side table!?!? You can even use a side table that you have around the house currently. Simply attach a briefcase (or two) to the top of your side table. You have almost instantly created a new salvaged addition to your rustic salvaged home decor. Not to mention, you now have a side table that is both useful and a conversation piece! Get creative. Furthermore, don’t be afraid to sand and paint your current side table to add a pop of color to the room of your choice.

What is the Liebster Award, Anyway?

As outlined by The Global Aussie, this award is passed down through the blogging community from one blogger to the next as a way to recognize new blogs for their hard work and accomplishments — to share the blogging love! The earliest Liebster Award dates back to 2011, and the award has been going strong ever since. Furthermore, the term “Liebster” has a German meaning of “sweetest, kindest, nicest, dearest, beloved, lovely, kind, pleasant, valued, cute, endearing, and welcome.”

A Little Bit About Me, your Liebster Award 2017 Nominee

  1. I was born in a small town called Uniontown, Pennsylvania and grew up not too far from there in Leisenring. My mom still lives in that same house today, where myself and my two brothers were raised in that coal-mining “patch.” The patch town comes complete with a small little church, a company “general” store and it’s own little post office.
  2. After graduating high school, I obtained my B.S. in Biology, my M.A. in Teaching, and worked as a high school science teacher for several years prior to my “surprise” twin daughters coming along, which I wouldn’t change for the world! My current “blended” family consists of myself, my hubs, two stepsons, son and fraternal twin daughters. I am a proud Navy mama, as our oldest son just graduated from the Navy Basic Training in Great Lakes, Illinois. Anchors aweigh!
  3. I currently am employed as a full-time real estate agent, and have been for the past 8 years. I love the hustle and bustle and ever-changing experiences that real estate offers. I must admit, being a Realtor is never a dull moment!
  4. I LOVE to crochet. Yep, crochet. Though my kids like to joke and call me “grandma” when I am in the crochet zone, I find it super relaxing and a way to clear my head. My family, extended family, and friends can all attest that I have been known to give crochet blankets for gifts on a regular basis, LOL.
  5. My family and I own an RV and love to travel RV style! The thought of waking up in a different location every other week (or sooner) if I wanted is adventurous and refreshing to me. If it were up to my husband, we would be RVers full time, no doubt.
  6. I LOVE animals. I currently have two mini Aussie shepherds (Cooper and Zoe), a mini long-haired chihuahua (Tito), a Himalayan cat (Mocha), a Guinea Pig (Hershey), a Bearded Dragon (Copper) and a few fish. I know, the fish aren’t true “animals” but I thought an honorable mention was in order 😉
  7. In all of my free time — in case you didn’t know there are definitely more than 24 hours in a day — I decided to Blog as a way to share my crazy and adventurous life with my followers. I hope that they, too, can get the sense that all things truly are possible with motivation and determination. I try to instill those very same values in my own children each day.

My Liebster Award 2017 Nomination Questions

  1. Have you ever visited a place just because you saw it in a book/series/animation/movie? What was that place?
    • Hmmm, I would have to say the first place that comes to mind is Disney World in Orlando, Florida. I have always been a sucker for Disney movies, so when I was given the opportunity to see the real thing up close and personal, I jumped at the chance. Truly magical!
  2. If you could take someone with you in your travels, who would it be?
    • I would definitely say my mom. Due to her health, she is home bound and hasn’t had an opportunity to travel outside of small town Pennsylvania. I would love for her to improve her health so that I can share in this new experience with her.
  3. When do you find time to blog?
    • Blogging for me happens pretty much anytime I can catch a free minute. I am most productive in the early morning before my kids wake up for the day, in the afternoon between clients, or in the evening once the kids have settled in for the evening. Once I get started on a new post, however, I find that I roll with it with ease and really enjoy reading the finished product.
  4. What is the city in the USA you would most like to visit and why?
    • My dream is to visit Boston, Massachusetts. I love exploring areas of history and hear that Boston is a must-add for my Bucket List.
  5. If you could take only 1 more trip, where would you go?
    • This is a tough one. There are so many places that I haven’t visited, but I am thinking if I had to choose one, I would choose Fiji. The photos I have seen of Fiji have been amazing!
  6. Which is your favorite holiday and why?
    • Christmas all the way. The lights, the sounds, the decorations, the caroling, the family gatherings and cups of hot cocoa. Snuggling in front of the fireplace and watching my favorite Christmas movies. Pure bliss.
  7. If you could go anywhere in the world where would you go and why?
    • Greece would be a place I would love to visit, specifically Crete and Athens. Crete because I have friends that own olive groves there and Athens for the history.
  8. Mayonnaise or Miracle Whip?
    • MAYONNAISE, 110%
  9. What is your favorite vacation you have taken — to where and why is it so memorable?
    • I really love cruising and can’t decide between them as any one of them being a favorite! Waking up and enjoying a new place practically every other day while on the ship is spectacular.
  10. What is your favorite book?
    • The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks
  11. What is the one post made by you that you like the most, and why?
    • Walk With Me through Central Park at Sea! would be my favorite post to date, because it showcases a video clip, photography and my writing style. It also takes me back to my serenity while on board the Oasis of the Seas mega ship on my last Royal Caribbean Cruise vacation.
